How To Train A Dog To Weave Poles

This tutorial is part of The Ultimate List Of Dog Trick Ideas which contains 99 other tricks like this!

Weave poles can be taught quickly and easily by luring a dog through them with either a treat or target stick. Used as part of competitive agility a dog flying with speed and agility through a set of poles is an impressive act.

  1. For this trick you can use any type of pole or even cone, garden canes are great to practice with. Stick the poles into the ground at intervals of about 15 inches (or place the cones at the same distance apart)
  2. Begin at one end and slowly lure your dog through the cones regularly reinforcing and rewarding his progress.
  3. Practice this and gently speed up, introduce your command word.
  4. Gradually stop the reinforcement and reward throughout and just give a reward at the end.

Top tip; your dog will speed up very quickly when he gets the idea so do not rush the teaching of this trick.

Dog trainers love this trick, particularly in competitive agility sessions as the dogs thoroughly enjoy the weave.
