How To Train A Dog To Say No

This tutorial is part of The Ultimate List Of Dog Trick Ideas which contains 99 other tricks like this!

A trick that gives the impression that your dog is saying no when asked a question.

  1. This trick is an amalgamation of look left and right but simply speeded up to a different command word.
  2. Because you have taught look left and right to your dog by using positive reinforcement he will offer the behavior during training sessions if he believes that it may earn him a reward.
  3. He will first offer the act of looking in one direction and when he realizes that there is no reward provided he will offer the other direction.
  4. By timing reinforcement and rewards you can easily add the command word, “no” to these actions and train the new trick based on joining the two tricks already learned.

Top tip; withhold reward gently until your dog is shaking his head with vigor.

Dog trainers love this trick because it uses excellent timing to chain together tricks that are already taught.
